Godfather of AI leaves Google to talk more about the dangers of AI

Yes, the Godfather of AI leaves Google. Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the godfather of artificial intelligence (AI), has announced his departure from Google, and he now regretted his work. Although Hinton paved the path for modern systems like ChatGPT with his research, in an interview with the BBC, he warned of certain “quite scary” risks associated with AI chatbots.

“Right now, they’re not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be.”

-Geoffrey Hinton

The increase of AI applications has made “the dangers of AI” a hot issue, and the new warning from its “Godfather” is already heating up debates.

In the NYT today, Cade Metz implies that I left Google so that I could criticize Google. Actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly.

Godfather of AI leaves Google: A quick reminder of what he has done

Geoffrey Hinton is one of the pioneers of deep learning, a branch of AI that uses neural networks to learn from large amounts of data and perform tasks such as image recognition, natural language processing, and speech synthesis. He is credited with developing some of the key algorithms and concepts that underpin deep learning, such as capsule networks.

Hinton joined Google in 2013 as part of its acquisition of DNNresearch, a startup he co-founded with two of his former students, Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krizhevsky. At Google, he led the Google Brain team.

Hinton said he enjoyed his time at Google and praised the company for its support and vision for AI. He said he was proud of the achievements and innovations that his team accomplished during his time. He also expressed his gratitude to his colleagues and friends at Google for their inspiration and friendship.

The dangers of AI lie in the possibility of machines becoming more intelligent than humans

Hinton said he plans to continue his research on deep learning and neural networks at the University of Toronto and the Vector Institute. He has stated that understanding the brain and drawing inspiration from it for AI models is of great importance to him in the field of artificial intelligence. He also mentioned a desire to finally get around to working on some pet projects.

Google has been spending extensively on artificial intelligence and fighting with other internet giants like Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft for talent and market share, so Hinton’s departure is a major loss for the corporation. Hinton’s fame and impact in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are unrivaled, and his work has significantly advanced the discipline. His departure also casts doubt on Google’s ability to maintain its position as a leader and innovator in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). According to the BBC interview, he acknowledged that his advanced age was a factor in his choice to depart the computer giant.

Another danger of AI is the potential for privacy violations and data breaches as machines collect and process vast amounts of personal data

What Google executives said when the Godfather of AI leaves Google? In a statement, Google’s chief scientist, Jeff Dean, expressed gratitude for Hinton’s ten years of service to the firm.

“I’ve deeply enjoyed our many conversations over the years. I’ll miss him, and I wish him well!

-Dean

Latest from the AI race: Google’s Bard demo fails, and Microsoft takes the lead with new AI innovations like:

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • ChatGPT-powered Bing
  • Microsoft Loop
  • Microsoft Security Copilot

However, the emergence of all these tools, especially chatbots, brings with it some threats.

Dangers of AI from its Godfather

Dangers of AI chatbots explained by Geoffrey Hinton. According to the Godfather of AI, regardless of which company is behind it, the potential risks posed by chatbots are “quite scary,” adding that “bad actors” may take advantage of them.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that the kind of intelligence we’re developing is very different from the intelligence we have… So it’s as if you had 10,000 people and whenever one person learned something, everybody automatically knew it. And that’s how these chatbots can know so much more than any one person.”

-Hinton

Is he right? Hinton’s first worry has already come true: in a world where so much content on the internet is created by AI, it has become impossible to tell what is true and what is not.

One such image, depicting Pope Francis wearing a Balenciaga puffer coat, went popular in March, and most people thought its real. However, it is generated using the latest iteration of an online image generator called Midjourney, and now its inspired the other generations.

You probably saw on the news A.I. generations of Pope Francis wearing a white cozy jacket. I’d love to see your generations inspired by it.

Here’s a prompt by the original creator Guerrero Art (Pablo Xavier):

Future warning: Paralegals, personal assistants, and other “drudge work” jobs were of special concern to Hinton since they may be automated away in the future by AI.  If you are wondering what other troubles can be experienced in the future, keep reading, we gathered the popular AI warnings in the next part.

Dangers of AI, especially chatbots

Artificial intelligence (AI) is heralding a new era of technological innovation, revolutionizing numerous aspects of the world. However, the transformative impact of AI is not without perilous risks and formidable challenges, and chatbots are no exception.

The dangers of AI include the possibility of machines being hacked and used for malicious purposes

While chatbots are highly advantageous in providing a broad spectrum of services such as information, entertainment, and customer service, they also pose a considerable threat to several domains, including security, privacy, ethics, and society at large. This blog post endeavors to explore some of the potential hazards that AI chatbots present and proposes solutions to address them. Here are some of the dangers of AI chatbots:

  • Security risks
  • Privacy risks
  • Ethical considerations
  • Social risks

What do they mean?

The growing popularity of chatbots in various fields has also raised concerns over potential security risks, particularly those stemming from malicious actors. The dangers of AI extend to the potential for machines to create fake news and manipulate public opinion. These risks can range from spreading disinformation, propaganda, or fake news to phishing, spamming, or scamming users by impersonating trustworthy individuals or organizations.

Furthermore, chatbots that are not adequately secured or regulated can compromise the sensitive or personal information of users or organizations. To mitigate these dangers of AI, chatbot developers should implement robust encryption, authentication, verification, and moderation mechanisms. Additionally, adherence to ethical and legal standards and guidelines for data protection and privacy is essential.

One of the dangers of AI is the possibility of machines becoming self-aware and turning against their human creators

Privacy risks associated with chatbots are becoming increasingly prevalent as chatbots collect, store, and analyze vast amounts of user data, including conversations, behaviors, preferences, and emotions. Although this data can be used to enhance chatbot performance and functionality, it can also be employed for purposes that may infringe upon users’ privacy or consent. For instance, chatbots can exploit user data to deliver targeted personalized ads, recommendations, or offers. They may also share this data with third parties without the user’s knowledge or permission. Moreover, chatbots can construct psychological profiles of users based on their interactions and leverage this information to influence their decisions or actions and its just one of the dangers of AI.

To safeguard users’ privacy, chatbot developers must be transparent about their data collection and usage practices and allow users to opt out or delete their data. They should respect users’ boundaries and preferences and avoid manipulative or intrusive behaviors.

The dangers of AI are exacerbated by the lack of regulations and oversight in the development and deployment of these technologies

As AI chatbots become increasingly integrated into society and ethical considerations become more crucial than ever. The potential for chatbots to perpetuate bias, discrimination, or prejudice, whether intentionally or unintentionally, poses a significant ethical risk. They can also devalue human roles and relationships and threaten the autonomy and dignity of individuals. Furthermore, chatbots can generate content or actions that are harmful, offensive, or inappropriate, resulting in ethical dilemmas or conflicts.

To mitigate these dangers of AI, chatbot developers should prioritize human-centered and inclusive design principles and methods. They should also uphold ethical codes and principles and be accountable for the outcomes and impacts of their chatbots.

The dangers of AI include the possibility of machines making decisions that are not in the best interest of humanity

Dangers to society, chatbots may have both beneficial and harmful effects on people’s social lives and the culture at large. Chatbots, for instance, can improve areas like social inclusion, communication, education, and entertainment by expanding people’s access to relevant information, resources, and opportunities.

They also have the potential to encourage social innovation, creativity, and cooperation by opening up fresh avenues for communication and the production of new works. But chatbots also have the potential to lead to feelings of alienation and isolation. So, you should be careful when you chat with AI chatbots to avoid the dangers of AI.
