Elon Musk-owned X has released a refreshed version of its Android app, now available for download, after nearly a year of development. The app was rebuilt from scratch to address performance issues compared to its iOS counterpart.

The new app promises enhancements in loading, scrolling, and notifications. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, stated that the effort reflects “one of the largest engineering projects” in the company’s history. The revised app follows a significant spike in Android downloads in October, which highlighted the need for an upgraded platform.

Bier noted that the app is “faster, smoother, and more reliable,” and emphasized that it will facilitate rapid development of new features. Recent additions to the X platform include standalone apps for X Money and X Chat.

We've completely rebuilt the Android X app from the ground up.

It's faster, smoother, and more reliable than the old version in every way. We modernized the foundation so everything just feels better: scrolling, loading, notifications, you name it.pic.twitter.com/ULlSwiIlvV

The Android update aims to attract users in global markets, particularly where Android holds a dominant position. Previous versions of the app faced criticism, including instances where it failed to load posts upon link clicks.

Despite the improvements, Bier acknowledged that some issues persist, particularly with performance on older Android devices and support for Spaces, X’s live audio feature. These issues are currently being addressed.

Additional features, such as a new video editor, the react-with-video function, cashtags, and custom timelines, are planned for future release on Android. Users can access the new X app by updating their existing version through the Google Play Store.
