AI technologies are reshaping supply chains and driving business transformation, as identified in a report by Gartner, Inc. Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) are now leveraging advancements in AI to enhance resilience and operating models. These insights highlight three key themes shaping supply chain technology trends for 2026: autonomy and agency, specialization and intelligence, and trust and governance.
Christian Titze, Vice President and Chief of Research at Gartner, stated, “This year’s trends highlight the growing role of AI as the foundation for more autonomous, intelligent and adaptive supply chains.” He emphasized that organizations must integrate advanced technologies to realize measurable value and long-term resilience.
The themes reflect a growing trend towards self-directed systems operating across both digital and physical environments. Under the autonomy and agency theme, Gartner outlines four significant trends: Polyfunctional Robots, which are becoming flexible systems in labor-short environments; Physical AI, integrating AI with IoT sensors for real-time operational efficiency; Agentic AI, which enables AI systems to act and adapt autonomously; and Collaborative Multiagent Systems, allowing multiple AI agents to coordinate across complex processes.
In the specialization and intelligence theme, Intelligent Simulation enhances predictive capabilities through advanced analytics, enabling proactive supply chain management. Domain-Specific Language Models are improving performance in specialized supply chain tasks by delivering greater accuracy than general models.
Trust and governance are represented through the increasing importance of Product Provenance for regulatory compliance and transparency. Additionally, Decision Governance frameworks are being established to ensure accountability in AI-enabled decision-making.
