Google announced Wear OS 7, the latest update to its wearable operating system, during its I/O 2026 event. The update integrates Gemini Intelligence and introduces a new widget system that enhances user experience.
Wear OS 7 carries over design updates planned for Android 17, featuring new interface elements that provide glanceable information. A major addition is Wear Widgets, which are dynamic and customizable for developers, closely mirroring smartphone widgets. Users can create these widgets using the AI-powered Create My Widget tool, compatible with smartwatches.
Additionally, Wear OS 7 will incorporate Live Updates, a system that displays real-time information on the lock screen of Android devices. The update includes a default workout tracker with built-in media controls, applicable across various wearable fitness apps. Users will have the ability to control which apps automatically launch the media controls interface.

Another notable feature is the Remote Output Switcher, allowing users to switch audio output between different headphones or speakers while streaming. The update includes several APIs for developers to connect their applications with Google’s Gemini Intelligence, including an AppFunctions API that integrates app functions with Google Assistant. This will also support task automation directly from smartwatches.
More features of Wear OS 7 are expected to be detailed by Google during I/O 2026. A test version of the OS is currently accessible through the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, ahead of its anticipated release later this year.
