Samsung Mobile Experience (MX) division COO Won-Joon Choi confirmed to Bloomberg that the company will continue to offer the S Pen on its devices. Choi stated that Samsung is developing new display technology to address the challenges of retaining the stylus. The executive said this effort aims to reduce the physical and design “penalty” associated with including the S Pen.
The confirmation signals Samsung’s commitment to the stylus as a long-term differentiator for its premium smartphones. The move follows the company’s decision five years ago to discontinue the Galaxy Note series in favor of foldables. Samsung relocated the S Pen to the Galaxy S Ultra line, though recent hardware changes have impacted compatibility.
Choi stated that the S Pen will continue to be a “core” feature for Samsung devices. He explained that the company is working on a new display structure to accommodate the stylus without compromising device form factors. This development seeks to overcome engineering hurdles introduced by recent hardware modifications.
Last year, Samsung removed the digitizer layer from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to achieve a thinner profile. This change resulted in the loss of S Pen support for that specific foldable device. Industry rumors suggest S Pen support may return with the upcoming Galaxy Z “Wide” Fold model.
Samsung is relying on internal innovation to maintain the stylus’s viability. The company aims to integrate the S Pen without requiring the traditional digitizer layer that adds thickness. Successful implementation could influence the design of future Galaxy S Ultra phones.
