Meta announced the launch of its new line of smart glasses, called Meta Glasses, starting at a price of $299. The glasses are produced in partnership with EssilorLuxottica but do not feature any branding from Ray-Ban or Oakley.
Available in several countries from today, the Meta Glasses come in various color and lens combinations. According to Counterpoint Research, Meta and EssilorLuxottica hold an estimated market share of over 80% in the smart glasses market.
The Meta Glasses do not include a display screen but are equipped with a camera and personal speakers. A dedicated button activates the Meta AI assistant, which users can customize for other functions.
Meta reports that the glasses have over eight hours of battery life, and the included on-the-go charging case offers an additional 40 hours of usage. The first model, named “Meta Adventurer,” features a rectangular shape and is available in standard and large sizes.
The “Meta Fury” frame has a boxier design, aligned with popular men’s styles. Another model, “Meta Glasses by Kylie,” features a slim oval frame designed in collaboration with American model Kylie Jenner.
The Meta AI assistant can answer queries regarding sports scores and local restaurants, assist with daily tasks, and soon will support a “Pedestrian navigation” feature for turn-by-turn walking directions. Additionally, Meta plans to add support for live translation in 14 new languages, including Japanese and Mandarin.
The announcement of the Meta Glasses follows Snap’s recent unveiling of its consumer smart glasses, Specs, priced at $2,195.
