Adobe announced the discontinuation of its 2D animation software, Adobe Animate, on Monday through an update to its support site and emails to existing customers. The software will end on March 1, 2026, with the company citing evolving technologies and a focus on newer platforms.

The announcement specifies support timelines for different user groups. Enterprise customers will receive technical support until March 1, 2029, to facilitate a smooth transition. All other customers can access support through March 2025. These measures address immediate needs following the discontinuation date.

Users of Adobe Animate have expressed incredulity, disappointment, and anger over the decision. Many highlight concerns about the absence of direct alternatives that replicate the software’s specific functionality. Reactions surfaced quickly on social media platforms.

On X, one customer urged Adobe to open-source the software instead of abandoning it entirely. Responses in the thread conveyed strong frustration. One commenter stated, “this is legit gonna ruin my life.” Another remarked, “literally what the hell are they doing? animate is the reason a good chunk of adobe users even subscribe in the first place.” These posts reflect the software’s central role in users’ workflows and subscriptions.

Adobe addressed the discontinuation in an FAQ on its support site. The company stated, “Animate has been a product that has existed for over 25 years and has served its purpose well for creating, nurturing, and developing the animation ecosystem. As technologies evolve, new platforms and paradigms emerge that better serve the needs of the users. Acknowledging this change, we are planning to discontinue supporting Animate.” This explanation traces the software’s history and rationale for ending support.

The decision aligns with Adobe’s current emphasis on products incorporating AI technologies. Animate no longer fits the company’s direction in this area. Prior indicators included the software’s absence from discussions at Adobe’s annual Adobe Max conference. Additionally, Adobe released no 2025 version of Animate.

Adobe does not propose a single application as a full replacement for Animate. Customers subscribed to the Creative Cloud Pro plan can utilize other Adobe tools for specific animation tasks. Adobe After Effects supports complex keyframe animation via its Puppet tool. Adobe Express handles animation effects applicable to photos, videos, text, shapes, and other design elements. These options cover portions of Animate’s capabilities.

The software remains operational for users who have downloaded it. Adobe will not interrupt existing installations post-discontinuation. Pricing for Animate included $34.49 per month on a standard plan, $22.99 per month with a 12-month commitment, or $263.88 for an annual prepaid plan.

Some users suggest alternative animation programs. These include Moho Animation and Toon Boom Harmony, both established options in the 2D animation field. TechCrunch contacted Adobe for further comment and plans to update the article upon receiving a response.
