Google announced that the Chrome app on Android will now allow users to share their approximate location with websites, enhancing user privacy. This feature enables users to provide general location information, such as for weather updates, without disclosing exact GPS coordinates. Users still have the option to share precise location data if they choose.
Additionally, Google stated that this approximate location sharing feature will be available on Chrome for desktops in the coming months. New APIs will be introduced for developers to specify the type of location data needed for their websites.
“We encourage developers to review their location needs and only ask for precise location when it’s required for the site functionality,” a Google representative said.
The company’s plans for implementing approximate location sharing in Chrome on iOS remain unclear. However, iPhone and iPad users have been able to enable approximate location sharing for specific apps for several years. This option provides users with a degree of privacy while using applications that require location information.
