If a video uniquely identifies you, you can now request its removal on YouTube. This includes anything that makes you easily recognizable! To combat deepfakes, YouTube has introduced a new policy to protect people from AI-generated content that mimics their likeness or voice.

It means that now England’s head coach, Gareth Southgate, can report the deepfakes that troubled him during Euro 2024.

How does YouTube’s new deepfake remover work?

YouTube’s new policy allows users to request the removal of AI-generated content that resembles their likeness or voice. The content in question must be “uniquely identifiable.” This means it must contain enough information that allows others to recognize the person depicted. This could include features such as voice, face, mannerisms, or other distinct characteristics.

The policy does not apply to content that is clearly satire or parody. YouTube recognizes the importance of these forms of expression and thus excludes them from removal requests.

YouTube only accepts claims directly from the individuals affected, with a few exceptions:

  • People without internet access
  • Vulnerable individuals
  • Minors
  • Deceased individuals

How to start the process?

Users can file a request to have the AI-generated content removed by following the guidelines provided on YouTube’s Privacy Guidelines page. The request must include sufficient details to support the claim that the content is uniquely identifiable and unauthorized.

Once a request is filed, the uploader of the content has 48 hours to take action. During this period, they have several options:

  • Trim the part of the video that contains the unauthorized likeness or voice.
  • Blur the identifiable features.
  • Remove the video entirely.

If the uploader fails to take any action within the 48-hour window, the complaint will be escalated to YouTube for further review. YouTube will then evaluate the request and decide on appropriate measures, which could include removing the video.
