Sony will continue to produce physical game discs for titles released before January 2028, but all games launched after that date will be exclusively available in digital format. This decision has prompted negative feedback from parts of the gaming community regarding the end of physical media.
In a private communication reported by Game File, Sony reassured PlayStation developers and publishers that they can still reorder physical discs for games that have already been or will be released before the cut-off date. According to Sony, this discontinuation of physical discs will not affect existing titles.
While details regarding the revised disc ordering process remain unspecified, Sony has acknowledged that the procedure will change. Reports indicate that the company has invested millions to repurpose its disc factory in Salzburg, Austria, for the manufacture of optical microlenses.
Additionally, Sony stated it will allow publishers to release new retail games using digital codes, although further details have yet to be disclosed. The transition away from physical discs is expected to have significant implications for the gaming industry.
