Opera has launched a new safety feature called Paste Protect to counter malicious clipboard attacks. This innovation marks Opera as the first major browser to offer a native protection and warning system against ClickFix-based cyberattacks, which accounted for over half of malware loading cyber attacks in 2025, according to the company.
ClickFix attacks often masquerade as Captcha prompts, leading users to unknowingly copy malicious code to their clipboard. This copied code typically instructs victims to execute commands that can install malware such as Lumma Stealer, compromising sensitive information like saved passwords and browser autofill data.
Paste Protect is designed to detect harmful scripts intended for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The feature blocks copy actions when malicious scripts are identified and warns users with a red icon in the address bar. Users can view the first 120 characters of the copied command and have the option to mark sites as safe in case of false positives.
This feature is activated by default, but users can disable it in the browser settings under “Privacy & Security.” The update for Paste Protect is in the process of rolling out to Opera users.
