The Instagram for TV app is now available on Samsung TVs in the US, allowing users to watch reels and stories on a larger screen. Instagram initially launched the app in December 2022 for Amazon Fire TV devices before rolling it out to Google TVs in February 2023. The app organizes reels into channels categorized by topics such as music, sports, and travel, making it easier for users to find content based on shared interests.
In addition to existing features, Instagram is currently testing two new functionalities aimed at enhancing user experience. One feature enables users to cast Reels or videos from their Saved tab on their phones to their TVs. Instagram stated that this feature aims to facilitate sharing humorous or informative content not available in the app’s channels. Another test feature is a dedicated home for horizontal videos, designed to improve the viewing experience for content better suited for TVs and computers.
Beyond these enhancements, Instagram is exploring additional formats catered for larger screens and group viewing. The company is assessing options for creators to produce and post long-form videos, allowing for more in-depth storytelling. Instagram is also considering the development of episodic series specifically for TV audiences. Furthermore, the platform is working to bring livestreaming capabilities to televisions.
“As we explore longer-form, episodic, and live formats, we’re working closely with creators to understand what works best on TV and how these experiences can complement the ways people already use Instagram,” the company said in its announcement.
