Samsung has established a new division called RX, or Robotics eXperience, to manage its robotics projects. The division will be led by Dongkun Lee, an Executive Vice President who joined Samsung in May. Lee previously managed Hyundai’s robotics strategy, including its work with Boston Dynamics. Samsung CEO TM Roh will personally oversee the RX division.
RX will be headquartered in Samsung’s facilities in Seoul, South Korea. According to Reuters, the company also plans to create robotics research hubs in the US, China, and Japan to leverage local expertise. The establishment of RX highlights Samsung’s commitment to advancing physical AI technologies.
Hyundai recently completed its acquisition of Boston Dynamics, signaling a similar focus on robotics. In February, Alphabet’s robotics subsidiary was integrated into Google. OpenAI is developing devices intended to represent ChatGPT, starting with a speaker.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, Samsung aims to begin manufacturing humanoid robots within the year. Roh announced that Samsung will invest 19 trillion Korean won (approximately $13 billion) to establish manufacturing facilities in Gumi, Korea, for the production of these humanoid robots, as reported by CNBC.
