Warner Music Group announced it will acquire Sureel AI, a company focused on monitoring how artificial intelligence models utilize music. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, and Sureel AI will continue to operate as an independent platform.
Sureel AI’s technology analyzes music by breaking songs into smaller components rather than treating them as single entities. This approach is referred to as AI DNA, which allows for technical tracking of whether elements like a song’s melody, vocals, or rhythm have been used by AI models or if similar content has been generated.
Warner Music aims to utilize this system to detect unauthorized usage of artists’ work in AI training. The initiative will also help track the similarity between AI-generated songs and original works, thereby aiming to reduce copyright infringement risks and ensure accurate licensing for future revenues from AI-generated content.
In addition to song analysis, Sureel AI provides a tracking system that monitors artists’ voices, images, and styles. The system assists in determining which uses of voice cloning, AI avatars, and style imitation are authorized. This is particularly relevant amid the growing concerns in the music industry regarding the implications of deepfake voices and AI-generated content.
