Discord has completed the implementation of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for all voice and video calls on its platform. This marks the culmination of a years-long effort to enhance privacy for its users.
The encryption is automatically applied to all calls that are not conducted in stage channels, requiring no action or opt-in from users. This move is positioned as a critical step towards securing personal conversations on the social app.
Attitudes towards end-to-end encryption have varied across different platforms recently. In 2023, Meta removed end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages, and TikTok announced it would not provide this security feature for its DMs. In contrast, Apple has started encrypting RCS messages, improving privacy for communications between iOS and Android users.
