AST SpaceMobile launched its BlueBird 7 satellite aboard Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, marking a partial success for the mission. The New Glenn rocket successfully landed after delivering the satellite, solidifying Jeff Bezos’ achievement of a reusable launch vehicle.
Despite the successful rocket recovery, AST SpaceMobile faced challenges as its satellite reached a lower orbit than anticipated. This miscalculation rendered the BlueBird 7 functionally useless, as its operational capabilities could not be sustained at the lower altitude.
The company stated, “While the satellite separated from the launch vehicle and powered on, the altitude is too low to sustain operations with its on-board thruster technology and will de-orbit.”
Bezos shared a video of the rocket’s successful landing on X, though he did not provide further commentary. This incident illustrates the complexities and risks involved in satellite launches, especially concerning payload deployment accuracy.
