Apple manufactures 25% of its iPhones in India, fulfilling a JPMorgan prediction from 2022. The company began producing the entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of its September 2024 launch. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the majority of U.S. demand is now fulfilled by India-made iPhones.

This shift significantly diversifies Apple’s supply chain away from China, stabilizing production amid changing U.S. tariff rules. India accounted for 55 million iPhones of the roughly 220 million to 230 million produced globally in 2024, according to Bloomberg. The move also deepens Apple’s stake in India as both a manufacturing hub and a consumer market.

In 2025, Apple accelerated its shift to India due to uncertainty in China caused by evolving U.S. tariff regulations. President Donald Trump personally warned Cook against expanding further in India at a business summit in Doha in May, according to the report. The warning underscores the geopolitical stakes involved in Apple’s production realignment.

India shipped 14 million iPhones last year, a 9% year-over-year increase, according to Counterpoint. Total iPhone sales in India surpassed $9 billion in 2024, Bloomberg reported. Apple is reportedly in talks to launch Apple Pay in India in 2025.

Apple opened its sixth Indian store last month. The company continues to expand its retail presence in the country alongside its manufacturing growth.

Bloomberg reported the figures and context regarding Apple’s production and market data. JPMorgan predicted the 25% India manufacturing share in 2022.
