Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the next-generation console codenamed “Project Helix” will lead in performance and play both console and PC games. Sharma confirmed she will discuss the system at the Game Developers Conference next week with partners and developers. The announcement follows Sharma’s appointment as Xbox CEO a few weeks ago after former Xbox head Phil Spencer stepped down.

The development signals Microsoft’s attempt to regain momentum in the gaming hardware market after a rocky year for its gaming brand. If rumors about a PlayStation 6 delay prove true, Microsoft could gain a multi-year hardware advantage over Sony. The console’s ability to play both console and PC games represents a strategic shift in platform compatibility.

Sharma revealed the console codenamed “Project Helix” in a post on X. She stated the system will “lead in performance” according to the announcement. The executive shakeup at Xbox followed a difficult period for Microsoft’s gaming division last year.

Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console.

Partners and developers will receive more details about Project Helix during Sharma’s GDC presentation next week. Industry observers question whether the new console functions primarily as a PC masquerading as console hardware. Microsoft has not released specific performance benchmarks or hardware specifications for the system.

Sharma replaced Phil Spencer as Xbox CEO a few weeks ago. Microsoft’s gaming brand faced challenges throughout the previous year. The company competes directly with Sony’s PlayStation line in the console market.
