Call of Duty will introduce a new free game mode called Black Ops Royale on March 13. The development marks a significant expansion of the franchise’s multiplayer offerings by reintroducing a classic battle royale format to the current player base. This mode diverges from the established Warzone mechanics to offer a distinct gameplay experience focused on legacy features.

The launch of Black Ops Royale provides a free alternative to the standard Warzone experience, potentially attracting players who prefer the original Blackout style of play. This initiative leverages nostalgia for the series’ first battle royale mode while integrating modern weapon mechanics from the recent Black Ops 7 release. The mode represents a strategic diversification of the Call of Duty ecosystem.

Matches will feature 100 players dropping in as four-person teams on the massive Avalon map. The mode will not include familiar Warzone features like loadouts, the gulag, or buy stations. Gameplay focuses on scavenging and upgrading weapons from the recent Black Ops 7 game.

According to the team’s announcement, the mode will incorporate reimagined Blackout features such as weapon handling and bullet drop for modern Warzone players. It will also include an open-ended perks system, another nod to the original Call of Duty battle royale mechanic. These elements are designed to refresh the experience for veteran players.

Black Ops Royale pays homage to Blackout, the series’ first battle royale mode from CoD: Black Ops 4. The original Blackout mode was first released with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in 2018. The new mode serves as a direct tribute to that foundational battle royale entry.
