Figma integrates OpenAI Codex for design-to-code workflow

The integration operates through Figma’s MCP server, allowing a workflow transition between the two platforms.

Figma is integrating OpenAI’s Codex to enable users to create and modify designs directly within coding environments. This collaboration utilizes Figma’s MCP server to facilitate seamless movement between design files and the coding tool. The integration follows a similar recent partnership with Anthropic to incorporate Claude Code. Previously, users could import details from Figma design files, Figma Make, or FigJam into Codex for code implementation.

The integration operates through Figma’s MCP server, allowing a workflow transition between the two platforms. Loredan Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, provided context on the partnership’s objective. Crisan stated, “With this integration, teams can build on their best ideas—not just their first idea—by combining the best of code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft that comes with Figma’s infinite canvas.” This functionality is designed to bridge the gap between visual design and engineering processes.

Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead, explained the tool’s expanded utility. Embiricos said, “The integration makes Codex powerful for a much broader range of builders and businesses because it doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full-time coders.” This approach targets a dual audience of designers and developers.

OpenAI launched Codex as a command-line coding assistant last year to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code. The company subsequently integrated the tool into ChatGPT and released a dedicated MacOS app earlier this month. The MacOS app achieved one million downloads within its first week of release. OpenAI released two new Codex models days after the app launch. Over one million users utilize Codex weekly.

Figma is a prominent partner for OpenAI and was among the first companies to launch an app in ChatGPT in October 2025. This latest collaboration builds on that existing relationship. The integration is currently available to users accessing Codex through Figma’s MCP server. The partnership aims to streamline the transition from design conception to code-based implementation.
