NVIDIA and Uber to deploy 100,000 robotaxis by 2027

Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz, and Lucid are preparing compatible passenger cars for the network

NVIDIA and Uber are joining forces to turn the long-promised world of robotaxis into a global reality, announcing a massive partnership to deploy 100,000 autonomous vehicles starting in 2027. The deal centers on NVIDIA’s new “Hyperion 10” architecture, a specialized hardware and sensor kit that effectively makes any car “Level 4-ready”—meaning it can drive itself without human intervention under specific conditions.

The collaboration has already attracted a high-profile roster of automakers. Giants like Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz, and Lucid are lining up to build passenger cars compatible with the system, while Volvo and Aurora are applying the same technology to long-haul freight. For Uber, the move is a bid to create a “unified” network where riders can hail a ride and get either a human driver or a robot, depending on what’s available.

To keep these digital drivers sharp, the two companies are building a massive AI “data factory” using NVIDIA’s Cosmos platform. This facility will process trillions of miles of driving data, helping the cars learn to navigate the messy reality of city streets—from sudden traffic shifts to unpredictable pedestrians—using the same kind of reasoning logic found in modern generative AI.

Safety remains the biggest hurdle for public trust, and NVIDIA is attempting to set a new industry gold standard with its “Halos” program. This system will act as an independent inspection lab to certify that these AI-driven cars meet strict safety and cybersecurity requirements. By standardizing the tech and the safety checks, the companies hope to finally move autonomous driving out of the testing phase and onto everyday city streets.
