Apple released iOS 26.5 today, introducing beta support for end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging. Users must have an iPhone running iOS 26.5 connected to a wireless network that supports encrypted messaging over RCS. In the United States, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon offer immediate support for the new RCS protocol.
Android users also need to have the latest version of Google Messages on a compatible device connected to a supporting network for successful communication. A new lock icon appears at the top of RCS chats on iPhones, indicating that the conversation is secure.
“Encryption is on by default and will be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations,” Apple stated. For messages between Apple devices, the company will continue to route communications using its iMessage protocol.
In addition to the RCS update, Apple released updates for iPadOS, macOS Tahoe, and watchOS, all of which also reached version 26.5. Key new features include a “suggested places” function in Maps that highlights locations based on user interests and a new Pride-themed “Luminance” wallpaper.
This release effectively resolves longstanding issues related to RCS messaging, allowing iOS and Android users to communicate securely without the need for third-party applications such as Signal or WhatsApp. The evolution of this feature came after years of development, influenced by a pressure campaign and regulatory actions from China.
