Threads announced an expansion of its trending topic summaries within the Explore element of the app, providing artificial intelligence-generated summaries of key discussion topics among users. This feature, which was originally launched in the U.S. in February 2024, aims to enhance user engagement by reflecting the main topics gaining traction on the platform.
The feature is now live in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil, according to Threads Chief Connor Hayes, who stated, “Threads is where you go to talk about what’s happening around the world — and Trending helps you find those conversations. We’ve been rolling it out to more countries and it’s now live in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil as of today. Working on getting it to more places.”
Topics summarized by Threads’ AI are determined based on user engagement levels. The company maintains human oversight to ensure that topics comply with community guidelines, avoiding the promotion of inappropriate content. This approach aims to encourage real-time discussions, allowing users to engage more easily with ongoing conversations.
To manage user expectations, Threads refers to these summaries as “timely topics” rather than trends. This terminology reflects a cautious approach to controlling perceptions around the feature’s capabilities. The focus on real-time engagement positions Threads to compete with X, seeking to become the leading platform for topical discussions, particularly during unfolding events.
Currently, Threads reports 400 million monthly active users, while X claims 600 million MAUs. The expansion of trending topic summaries is expected to create more opportunities for real-time engagement and reinforce Threads’ presence in key discussion areas.
