Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit for Anthropic PBC, confirmed that the company briefed the Trump administration about its new Mythos model, TechCrunch reports. The Mythos model, announced last week, is deemed too dangerous for public release due to its advanced cybersecurity capabilities.
During an interview at the Semafor World Economy summit, Clark discussed the ongoing engagement with the U.S. government, even as Anthropic sues the Department of Defense (DOD). In March, Anthropic filed a lawsuit after the DOD labeled the company a supply-chain risk. The conflict centers around military access to Anthropic’s AI systems, which could be used for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. OpenAI secured the military contract instead of Anthropic.
Clark characterized the government’s designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk as a “narrow contracting dispute.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to national security and the necessity for government partnerships with innovative private sector firms. “Our position is the government has to know about this stuff, and we have to find new ways for the government to partner with a private sector that is making things that are truly revolutionizing the economy,” Clark said.
His remarks followed reports suggesting that Trump officials encouraged several major banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley, to test the Mythos model.
Clark also addressed AI’s broader societal impacts, particularly concerning unemployment and higher education. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously warned that AI could lead to unemployment levels comparable to those during the Great Depression. However, Clark expressed a more measured view, highlighting that while AI advances rapidly, Anthropic has only noted “some potential weakness in early graduate employment” within specific industries.
In response to inquiries about college majors in light of AI advancements, Clark recommended pursuing fields that involve synthesis of various subjects and analytical thinking. He stated, “What AI allows us to do is it allows you to have access to sort of an arbitrary amount of subject matter experts in different domains.” He stressed the importance of asking the right questions and integrating insights from diverse disciplines.
Clark confirmed that the company is prepared for significant employment shifts resulting from AI advancements. He stated that discussions with the government about Mythos and future models will continue, underlining the importance of collaboration between private innovation and public oversight.
