Google has introduced native controller remapping for its Android 17 Beta, enabling users to customize gamepad buttons, sticks, and triggers uniformly across games.
The new feature addresses a long-standing request from gamers, providing users with the flexibility to create custom button layouts that remain consistent without the need for repetitive setup across different titles. This system-level remapping differentiates itself from current solutions, which often rely on individual game configurations or third-party applications.
According to a Reddit post by Mishaal Rahman, a Google employee and former editor at Android Authority, the company has implemented this feature in response to persistent user feedback. This enhancement allows both wired and Bluetooth controllers to be customized for a better gaming experience.
Users can access the feature through the Game Controller settings menu. For wired controllers, they should navigate to Settings > System > Game Controller, while Bluetooth users can find it under Settings > Connected devices > Device details after selecting the connected gamepad, followed by Game Controller Settings.
The remapping capabilities include adjustments for face buttons, triggers, thumbstick clicks, and the ability to swap directional inputs such as analog sticks and the D-pad. Users can also save their preferences directly on their devices.
Designed with accessibility in mind, this feature aims to help players adjust controls to fit their physical needs and muscle memory. However, remapping is currently available only on devices operating with Android 17 Beta, specifically Beta 2 or later.
Google acknowledged that there are still issues in this early version, such as incorrect button glyphs appearing for certain controllers, but functionality operates as intended. The company is soliciting user feedback prior to the stable release, indicating that further adjustments may be forthcoming.
