Nintendo will implement differentiated pricing for its first-party digital and physical Switch 2 games, with digital titles priced lower than their physical counterparts.
This pricing strategy marks a departure from Nintendo’s previous uniform pricing model for first-party games and may impact consumer purchasing habits, potentially benefiting digital distribution.
The new pricing structure will commence with “Yoshi and the Mysterious Book,” set for release on May 21. The digital version will cost $60 on the eShop, while the physical version will be $70 at retail.
Previously, first-party games, such as “Donkey Kong Bananza” and “Pokémon Pokopia,” retailed for $70 regardless of format. This pricing adjustment follows a similar strategy implemented in some regions for “Donkey Kong Bananza,” where its digital version was available at a lower price than its physical release in markets including the UK.
Some physical Switch 2 game cartridges currently contain only game key cards for digital download, rather than the full game data.
