Google Photos announced on Tuesday new video editing features to simplify creating highlight reels and editing videos on Android and iOS devices. The update introduces templates with preset music and text overlays, alongside a redesigned editor, enabling users to produce professional content quickly.

The specialized templates, currently rolling out on Android devices, allow users to select from options featuring preset music and text overlays. Once a template is chosen, users hand-pick photos and videos from their gallery. The app then automatically generates a highlight reel that aligns visuals with the music’s beat, producing a professional-looking video in seconds. This process streamlines the creation of polished compilations without requiring manual synchronization.

Highlight reels consist of collections of clips and photos drawn from a user’s gallery, capturing specific events such as a memorable vacation or birthday celebration. The update enhances the creation process by making it quicker and more straightforward. Users access this function through the Create tab in the app, where they select the “Highlight Video” option to initiate the assembly of their chosen media into a cohesive reel.

A newly redesigned video editor is now available on both Android and iOS devices. This editor prioritizes user-friendliness with a universal timeline, which displays all video clips, photos, and other content in a single, consolidated view. This setup facilitates easier navigation and manipulation of elements during editing sessions. The interface also incorporates an adaptive canvas that dynamically adjusts based on the user’s specific needs or the demands of the project at hand, optimizing the workspace for efficiency.

Within the redesigned editor, users can integrate music and text directly into a single video clip, combining these elements seamlessly during the editing workflow. On Android devices, this updated tool replaces the previous version and functions as the default video editing option. The change ensures that all new editing projects on Android begin with this more intuitive interface.

Users on both Android and iOS can now explore the Google Photos music library to select suitable soundtracks for their highlight videos. This library provides a range of options to match the tone of various compilations. Additionally, Android users gain the ability to add custom text overlays to highlight videos, incorporating new fonts, colors, and backgrounds for personalized customization. These overlays allow for tailored messaging or captions that enhance the visual storytelling in the final product.
