Sony and NCSoft are developing Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new multi-platform MMO set in the Horizon universe, officially revealed on November 13, 2025.

The game, rumored previously, is a collaboration between Sony and Korean video game company NCSoft. Horizon Steel Frontiers will be available on PC, iOS, and Android platforms, and the game’s website confirms it will be free-to-play.

An announcement video, over 10 minutes long, combines cinematic sequences, pre-alpha gameplay, and developer interviews. This footage indicates a focus on battling the series’ signature mechanical beasts collaboratively with other players.

The Verge first observed promotional art for Steel Frontiers on an asset-sharing website prior to its official announcement at the G-Star 2025 event in Korea. The website contained a link to a Google Drive with open access to the announcement video. Sony and a PR firm representing NCSoft did not immediately comment.

The video displays players engaging with beasts and traversing natural environments alongside metallic structures familiar to fans of the Horizon games.

Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director at PlayStation’s Guerilla Games, stated in the video, “Horizon Steel Frontiers is a full-fledged MMORPG that NCSoft has built specifically for mobile.” He added, “With Steel Frontiers, you can step into this world anywhere, anytime.” Players will assume roles as machine hunters, seeking opportunities within the Deathlands region, a setting inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. The game facilitates shared experiences with “thousands of other players,” balancing cooperation in taking down machines with competition against rival tribes or for resources.

Executive producer Sung-Gu Lee summarized the game’s core concept as “the thrill of taking down colossal machines.” He noted, “Hunting massive machines was one of the greatest appeals of the original Horizon series. And now, we’re expanding that experience into the world of MMORPGs.” Lee detailed new mechanics for machine combat, including the ability to pick up dropped weapons from beasts and transport them on mounts for later use. Following the full announcement, the Horizon Steel Frontiers YouTube channel published a gameplay trailer showcasing battles against these beasts.

The announcement video also featured character customization, allowing players to create their own characters rather than playing as Aloy, the series’ prior protagonist.

A release date has not been provided by Sony or NCSoft, however, Lee indicated in the announcement video that the development team aims to make the game available “as soon as possible.”
