Spotify is testing a hidden SongDNA feature to map who made your favorite tracks

The tool highlights contributors like writers, producers, and engineers, turning credits into an interactive experience.

Spotify has been identified developing a “SongDNA” feature, discovered within the application’s code, that would permit users to explore music through the extensive credits of its creators. The function would highlight contributors such as writers, producers, engineers, composers, and vocalists.

The feature was initially uncovered by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who extracted information from the app’s code and generated screenshots illustrating how SongDNA would be integrated. Her findings indicate the feature would offer a visual experience allowing users to navigate through song credits, observe the connections between various contributors, and explore the full scope of their individual works. Wong provided a specific example, demonstrating how the artist Rei Ami, part of the “KPop Demon Hunters” cast, contributed her voice to tracks outside of the movie’s official soundtrack.

If released publicly, SongDNA would present a direct challenge to the interactive credits feature offered by the streaming service TIDAL, which provides a similar function for discovering music through its creators. The potential addition could serve as a tool for music industry professionals searching for new collaborators. It would also cater to fans interested in learning more about the personnel working behind the scenes on their favorite tracks and albums.

Shortly after Wong posted the screenshots of the feature on social media, she reported that Spotify had issued an app update which removed the references to SongDNA. When contacted for a statement, Spotify declined to provide any further details on the matter but did not issue an official denial regarding the feature’s existence. Following this, technologist and fellow reverse engineer Chris Messina independently confirmed SongDNA’s existence by locating distinct references to it within the app’s code. Messina noted that the code suggests the feature is designed to reveal the entire network of contributors behind a song.

Based on the available information, the SongDNA feature appears to be focused specifically on the people involved in the music creation process, rather than on the sonic or structural attributes of the music itself.
