Snapchat is implementing a change to its Memories feature, transitioning from free to paid storage for users with extensive saved content. The platform will limit free storage to 5 GB, requiring users to upgrade for additional space.

Launched in 2016, Memories has allowed Snapchat users to preserve Snaps that traditionally disappeared after 24 hours. Over the years, users have collectively saved more than 1 trillion Memories, demonstrating the feature’s popularity and importance to the platform’s user base.

The company recognizes the challenges of moving from a free service to a paid model. Snapchat acknowledges that transitioning to a paid storage system is difficult but believes the new plans will provide value to users. The platform aims to continue investing in and improving the Memories feature for its entire community.

Under the new storage system, users exceeding the 5 GB free limit will be prompted to upgrade. Snapchat has introduced several storage plan options:

  • Introductory Plan: 100 GB storage
  • Snapchat+ Plan: 250 GB storage
  • Snapchat Platinum Plan: 5 TB storage

To provide users with flexibility, Snapchat will offer 12 months of temporary storage for those who exceed the free limit. During this period, users can either subscribe to a paid plan or download and store their Snaps on alternative platforms.

For users who prefer not to pay, Snapchat offers multiple options to export Memories. To download individual Snaps, users can open the app, access Memories, select desired Snaps, and choose an export location. The platform supports exporting multiple Snaps simultaneously.

Users wanting to download their entire Snapchat data can follow a straightforward process. Navigate to Settings, select “My Data,” choose the data type and date range, and submit a request. Snapchat will send an email with a download link containing all Memories, allowing users to store their content independently.
