Google has launched Gemini Canvas, a free, AI-powered no-code platform that allows users to build applications, websites, games, and e-learning tools using natural language prompts.

The platform, powered by Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash models, automates coding tasks to help both beginners and experienced creators build functional products more efficiently.

How Gemini Canvas works

Gemini Canvas is designed to simplify the process of prototyping, coding, and design. Users provide simple, descriptive prompts, which the platform’s AI models translate into functional outputs. For example, a user can describe a desired website layout or game mechanic, and the system will generate the necessary code and visual assets. This approach removes the technical barriers of traditional development, allowing creators to focus on their ideas rather than the implementation details.

The platform is built on two of Google’s advanced AI models, Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash. Gemini 2.5 Pro handles complex and intricate instructions to deliver precise outputs, while the Flash model is optimized for speed and efficiency, enabling rapid generation of designs and features.

Key features of the platform

Gemini Canvas includes a set of features designed to streamline the development process for users at all skill levels.

  • Natural language editing. The “Select and Ask” feature allows users to modify elements of their project using plain language. For instance, you can select a button and type “make this larger” to resize it without writing any code.
  • AI-powered feature integration. Complex functionalities can be added by simply describing them. A user can ask the platform to integrate an interactive quiz or generate biographical content, and the AI will handle the underlying coding.
  • Real-time code visualization. As users make changes with natural language prompts, they can see a live preview of the output and the corresponding code in real time. This helps with debugging and allows for immediate verification of changes.

How to get started with Gemini Canvas

Gemini Canvas is designed to be accessible and requires only a Google account to use, with no subscriptions or fees. The platform’s user-friendly interface guides creators through the development process.

The basic workflow involves these steps:

  1. Start with a prompt. Begin a project by describing your idea in a natural language prompt, such as “create a mobile app wireframe for a dashboard with analytics charts.”
  2. Refine the output. Use the “Select and Ask” feature to make specific edits. Select any element and describe the change you want in plain language.
  3. Add features. Integrate complex components by describing what you need. For example, “add a contact form with validation” to a website.
  4. Monitor in real time. Use the live preview to see how your changes affect the final product as you work.
  5. Experiment with version control. A new version control feature allows you to save snapshots of your project and revert to previous iterations, making it easy to experiment with different ideas without losing your progress.

Practical applications and examples

The platform’s versatility supports a wide range of projects across different industries, significantly reducing development time compared to traditional methods.

  • Web design. Users can build a custom photography portfolio by describing their preferred layout, color scheme, and interactive features like image galleries.
  • Game development. Hobbyists can create playable game prototypes by describing unique mechanics and visual styles, such as a block-based building game.
  • E-learning tools. Educators can design interactive quizzes and learning modules with embedded multimedia content and progress trackers by specifying the educational goals.

Recent updates have further refined the user experience, including a streamlined toolbar for easier access to AI-driven features and the addition of the practical version control system.
