Google announced at I/O 2026 that its AI Overviews feature has surpassed 2.5 billion monthly active users. The company did not provide information regarding user engagement with the content presented in these Overviews. GWI, a consumer research firm, has released data indicating significant variations in user behavior that could influence SEO strategies.
According to GWI, among daily users of AI Overviews, 50% click through to cited sources. This figure drops to 28% for weekly users and 14% for those who use the feature less frequently. This represents a 3.5 times difference in click-through behavior between the most frequent and infrequent users.
Chris Beer, Senior Data Analyst at GWI, stated that younger users assess AI Overviews’ credibility differently than older users. He noted, “Younger users are more likely to say AI Overviews have increased their trust of search results, but also more likely to say it’s decreased their trust as well.” Younger users appear to actively engage with the AI’s role in search, while older users tend to be more neutral.
The high click-through rate among daily users reflects an active evaluation rather than blind acceptance. These users utilize Overviews as a starting point, often transitioning to cited sources for deeper information. Content strategists are advised to optimize for this behavioral pattern.
Social search is another factor GWI is monitoring. Beer mentioned that 35% of Americans now utilize social platforms to find information online, a rise from 30% in 2020. This increase is occurring simultaneously with changes such as the rollout of AI Overviews and other search enhancements introduced by Google.
In light of the GWI findings, practitioners are encouraged to identify pages cited in AI Overviews and assess the depth and expertise offered in that content. Pages that do not provide substantial additional value compared to Overviews risk high bounce rates from AI-driven traffic. For content to be effective, it should include unique elements such as specific data points or expert insights that the AI cannot replicate.
