Apple is reportedly set to drop support for several older iPhone models with the release of iOS 19 later this year, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 17 series. A leak from a private account on X (via MacRumors), which accurately predicted iOS 18 compatibility, claims to have revealed the iPhone models that will be compatible with iOS 19.
The list of compatible devices includes the iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPhone SE (2nd generation or later).
Conversely, this means that the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, released in 2018, will not be compatible with iOS 19, along with any older models. The release of Apple Intelligence last year limited AI access to the Pro models of the iPhone 15, the entire iPhone 16 lineup, and the upcoming iPhone 17 family.
Details about iOS 19 are expected to be shared during WWDC 2025 in June, followed by a beta release. The new operating system is anticipated to be a significant overhaul, potentially integrating Apple’s operating systems more closely, introducing additional AI features, and redesigning the Camera app.
The iPhone 17 is expected to launch in September, with iOS 19 rolling out around the same time. Apple’s rollout of new features for iOS 18 throughout the latter half of 2024 and early 2025 suggests a similar rollout for iOS 19 this year.
