Redefining the commute: An engineer’s vision for the future of smart vehicles

I remember taking apart my dad’s old radio when I was eight, just to see how it worked (much to his dismay!). That insatiable curiosity about how things tick set the stage for a career obsessed with engineering and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. I’ve been incredibly lucky to contribute to some impactful projects, first at General Motors and now at Amazon, where I’m a Software Development Manager. These days, my work is all about merging the world of cars with the power of voice assistants and the convenience of eCommerce, contributing to the future of connected and autonomous vehicles – and it’s seriously exciting stuff.

Back in 2017, I had the chance to lead the development of the first-ever in-car online marketplace at General Motors. We were basically turning cars into mobile command centers! Drivers could connect to services and make purchases right from their dashboards – think ordering coffee on your way to work or reserving a parking spot before you even arrive. We even integrated with fuel stations, so you could pay for gas without ever taking out your wallet. It was all about making life easier and more convenient. Forbes even recognized the project for its potential to change the game! This was a huge step towards a future where cars are more than just transportation – they’re extensions of our digital lives. One of the biggest challenges we faced was designing a system that was both safe and user-friendly. We had to make sure drivers could access these features without getting distracted from the road. That meant a lot of user testing, iterating on designs, and collaborating closely with our UX team, which eventually led to development of a core set of primitives that let users go through the order without distraction and 3 or less taps on screen.

I’ve been deeply involved in developing this technology, including contributing to the Custom Assistant. As an engineering manager developing the platform that lets car manufacturers build their own custom voice assistants right into their vehicles. This technology allows drivers to interact with their vehicles in a more natural and personalized way – think safer, more convenient, and way cooler. Voice assistants are going to highly influence the future of what’s possible during a drive, giving us seamless control and access to information while keeping our eyes on the road. With the incredible advancements we are seeing in natural language processing and AI, these assistants are getting smarter and more capable every day. Soon, they’ll be able to anticipate our needs and provide proactive assistance, making driving safer and less stressful.

Imagine a world where your daily commute becomes a chance to get work done, relax, or even connect with loved ones – basically similar to what’s possible today on a commuter train, but making it possible even on your personal vehicle without a human chauffeur. When autonomous vehicles get wider deployment and adoption, the way we think about travel time is going to completely change. No more wasted hours stuck in traffic – instead, we’ll have opportunities to boost productivity, enjoy some downtime, or catch up with friends and family. Autonomous vehicles, coupled with the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), our interactions with in-car assistants will become even more natural and intuitive. We’ll be able to have real conversations with our cars! 

However, as cars become more connected to our lives, we need to be extra careful about data privacy and security. Companies working on these products understand protecting user data is absolutely crucial to gain customer trust. This is going to take a joint effort from car companies, tech providers, and regulators to ensure responsible innovation and keep everyone’s information safe. Striking the right balance between innovation that creates delightful experiences and data security and privacy will be the key differentiator, and has the potential to make or break a product.

Sharing knowledge and experience with aspiring innovators is always a priority for me. I believe mentorship is an investment in the future of innovation, after all, the best innovations come from collaboration and a willingness to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
