OpenAI has unveiled its eagerly anticipated ChatGPT app for macOS, marking a significant milestone in bringing advanced AI capabilities directly to Apple’s desktop platform. The announcement, which coincided with Apple’s WWDC 2024, introduces seamless integration between OpenAI’s chatbot and Apple’s ecosystem, including macOS, iPhone, and iPad.

ChatGPT Mac app offers familiar access and powerful capabilities

Mac users can now invoke ChatGPT with ease using the familiar keyboard shortcut Option + Space, akin to accessing Spotlight Search. This streamlined access transforms traditional search functionality into an interactive gateway to vast knowledge and assistance. Upon launch, ChatGPT appears as a user-friendly chat interface overlaid on the screen, ready to assist with a wide range of queries and tasks.

In addition to its accessibility via keyboard shortcut, the ChatGPT app for macOS supports functionality tailored to enhance productivity. Users can engage in conversations, take and discuss screenshots directly within the app, upload files, and communicate via voice commands—all from their desktop environment. This integration promises to streamline workflows and enhance user interaction with AI-driven assistance.

Expansion across Apple devices

Beyond macOS, OpenAI and Apple have outlined broader integration plans. Future updates will enable ChatGPT accessibility across iPhones and iPads, leveraging Siri and other applications within Apple’s ecosystem. These integrations, powered by GPT-4o, are set to debut alongside Apple’s upcoming operating systems, enriching user experiences across diverse platforms.

Availability and future prospects

Initially rolled out to Plus subscribers, the ChatGPT app for macOS is now available to all users, as announced by OpenAI. You just need to click here and download it.
