Elon Musk said X will release its full codebase as open source starting in August, a step that would make it the first major social media platform to publicly disclose its full production code for independent review.
“Next month, every line of code touching the X system will be open source and third-party audited. Only total transparency deserves trust,” Musk wrote in a post on X on July 24.
The announcement expands on earlier transparency measures at X. In January, X open-sourced its recommendation algorithm, and in March it released a major update to that algorithm alongside its code on GitHub.
The July 24 post said the coming release would cover the platform’s full infrastructure, not only its content-ranking system.

BusinessWorld reported that the release will include the platform’s complete code “without any exclusions” and third-party verification that the published code matches the code running in production.
Musk had signaled the plan earlier. In a July 15 post, he wrote, “Once we have completed our review for security vulnerabilities, we will make the entire codebase of X open source, with no exceptions. Moreover, we will invite third party reviewers to examine the system that is running to confirm that the open source code is what is running”.
The announcement came on the same day that Reuters reported Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM and more than two dozen other companies had signed a letter urging lawmakers not to impose “premature restrictions on open models that stifle competition or drive innovation overseas”.
Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella separately wrote that “open-weight models are essential to a healthy AI ecosystem,” according to Reuters.
Questions remain over the terms of X’s release. Open Source Force said Musk has not disclosed what license the code will carry, and Fossforce reported that the distinction between a full open-source release and a more limited source-available arrangement will become clear only when the code appears in August.
