Xbox Insiders can now stream games from their libraries for free in ad-supported sessions, which begin today. The free streaming is restricted to games users already own and is limited to one hour per session. Users will only encounter ads before the sessions start, and those with a paid cloud gaming subscription will not have to view the ads.
This ad-supported streaming option is currently in testing and will be available for a limited period. Microsoft began internal testing of an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming late last year, including approximately two minutes of preroll ads before streaming sessions, according to sources who spoke with The Verge.
In conjunction with the testing, Microsoft has increased Game Pass prices but added unlimited cloud gaming to the least expensive Game Pass Essential subscription at a monthly rate of $9.99. Previously, Xbox Cloud Gaming was accessible only through a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Microsoft stated the aim of the ad-supported streaming test is to expand affordable avenues for playing Xbox games.
The integration of ads into Xbox’s streaming service could reflect a trend seen in video streaming platforms’ ad tiers. Microsoft also noted that cloud gaming could enable Xbox One owners to play newer titles designed for Xbox Series X/S without the necessity of purchasing a new console.
The announcement occurs amid significant upheaval at Xbox, which includes widespread layoffs, studio closures, and a strategic shift back towards the Fallout franchise. Additionally, Xbox console prices are set to increase by over $100 starting on August 1st.
