GitHub mocks PlayStation with limited CD giveaway of public repos

GitHub says one CD is available per person, with shipping dependent on the recipient's country or region.

GitHub announced the launch of a limited-time offer allowing developers to order a burned CD of their public GitHub repository. The announcement follows PlayStation’s decision to discontinue physical game discs, and GitHub framed the move as a playful response, stating, “physically yours, forever.” The offer is valid from July 2 to July 6, 2026, and is limited to the first 1,000 eligible submissions.

The initiative is not just a joke; it requires developers to submit their GitHub username, the URL of a public repository, and shipping information through a Microsoft Forms page. Shipping details will be collected solely for delivery purposes, and GitHub stated it will delete the data afterward. However, only one CD can be claimed per person, and signing up does not guarantee fulfillment.

We heard you. And we agree.

In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM.

Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your children.

GitHub’s post gained over a million views shortly after its release, attracting mixed reactions on social media. Some users appreciated the humor, with comments highlighting nostalgia for physical media formats. Others criticized the initiative, pointing to GitHub’s reliability issues, which included 257 incidents from May 2025 to April 2026, with 48 major outages linked to increased demand from AI-generated load.

Developer Robert Hurst criticized the announcement as a poor public relations move amid ongoing reliability concerns. GitHub’s capacity to manage infrastructure is reportedly strained, with AI activity requiring 30 times more resources than traditional developer usage. Meanwhile, the broader technology industry is projected to spend nearly $700 billion on AI infrastructure in 2023.
