OpenAI has launched a flexible rate limit system for its Codex coding assistant. This new feature allows users to save rate limit resets for later use and is rolling out to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers. All eligible users will receive one free banked reset as part of the rollout, while Plus and Pro users can earn up to three additional banked resets through a limited-time referral pilot.
The referral program will last for two weeks, enabling Plus and Pro users to invite up to three friends. Both the referrer and the referred friend will receive a fresh banked rate limit reset once the referred friend sends their first message. Previously, rate limit resets were rigid and controlled entirely by OpenAI, providing no flexibility for users.
The update allows users to trigger a refresh when needed, optimizing usage during busy coding sessions. OpenAI has not disclosed future methods for earning resets after the referral pilot ends. However, analysts speculate that the new infrastructure opens up possibilities for OpenAI to monetize Codex by offering standalone resets and bundles to developers.
This change reflects OpenAI’s response to heavy usage patterns from power users, who often hit rate limits intended to prevent server overload. The introduction of saved rate limit resets enhances user control, allowing for a more flexible and efficient coding experience.
OpenAI aims to empower dedicated users of Codex with greater control over their rate limits through this update.
