A growing number of UK workers prefer small businesses or startups over multinational corporations amid a loss of faith in large employers. According to new data from CareermindsUK, two-thirds, or 67%, of UK workers expressed a preference for smaller enterprises.
This shift is linked to high-profile layoffs in sectors such as technology, where over 116,000 workers have lost their jobs this year, as reported by layoffs.fyi. Major companies like Oracle, Intel, Amazon, Tesla, Google, Meta, Dell, and Microsoft have contributed significantly to this figure, with tens of thousands laid off.
The perception that large corporations provide the safest jobs has weakened, with only one in three, or 33%, of workers still believing they offer secure positions and career advancement. Conversely, only 20% of workers view smaller companies as more secure in today’s economic climate, indicating a trend of workers being pushed away from larger enterprises instead of being inherently attracted to smaller ones.
Nearly half, or 47%, of workers cited a desire to support their employer as a compelling reason to join a smaller company or startup. The report highlights that the importance of human relationships and shared company values is increasingly influencing job seekers.
Careers expert Amanda Augustine noted, “Smaller, lesser-known employers now have a unique opportunity to attract top talent that may never have considered working for them before.” This shift presents a significant opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses in the current job market.
