The X app for iOS has introduced a built-in video editor as part of its strategy to compete with video-centric platforms like TikTok. The addition aims to encourage users to create and share original videos instead of reposting popular clips from other sources.
Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, stated that the new editor includes features such as overlay captions in multiple languages and customizable designs, as well as a green screen option. “One of our biggest priorities is to give creators the tools to create original content & reward those creators,” Bier said on X. He also noted that further updates to the video editor are expected in the coming weeks.

TechCrunch reported that X is currently revamping its Android app and is likely to add the video editor there as well. The latest feature follows previous updates designed to enhance the platform’s competitiveness against TikTok and similar apps, including a new video reaction function and a $1 million allocation for payouts to live video streamers.
In April, Bier indicated that X aims to reduce the visibility of reposts and content sourced from other platforms, urging users to focus on original videos. “I recommend recording original videos with your own voice over,” he wrote in response to user inquiries.
In addition to improving user engagement, more original video content will support AI systems like Grok, which trains on public content posted on X.
