Google is working to increase adoption of its Gemini for Home platform among hardware partners, positioning it as a “full-stack AI” solution that merges Google Home APIs with Gemini’s functionalities. The company has expanded its Google Home Gemini built-in program to enable partners to bypass the conventional multi-year research and development phase associated with creating AI-enabled hardware.
Google is providing access to validated, scalable reference designs, including system-on-chips (SOCs), sensors, and microphones, developed by its partners. These designs allow companies to efficiently develop, mass-produce, and release devices such as cameras and speakers equipped with Gemini controls.
The initiative extends to carriers, internet service providers, and security firms, encouraging them to integrate Google’s Home Premium AI subscription service into their devices using these reference designs. Google stated that this subscription offers features such as Home Brief, which summarizes home activity for users, and advanced deterrent systems that simulate presence in vacant homes.
The Google Home Premium subscription, formerly known as Nest Aware, is priced at a minimum of $10 per month or $100 annually for the standard tier. The advanced tier costs double that amount. Subscribers to Google’s $20 monthly AI Pro plan have standard access included, while users with the $250-per-month Ultra subscription are upgraded to the advanced tier.
Google has been integrating the Gemini platform into its offerings and redesigned its Home app to prioritize the AI assistant, releasing it globally last year. The updated app includes an “Ask Home” button for users to engage with Gemini, though it prompts users preferring Google Assistant to sign up for the AI experience instead.
The expansion of Google’s program is expected to lead to a rise in the number of devices powered by Gemini. Users who prefer alternatives can opt for platforms like Home Assistant or Apple HomeKit for home automation, with options available to remove Gemini features from their Google apps as needed.
