Google announced updates to its Shopping platform, introducing a new tool called Universal Cart, which consolidates purchases from various Google services, including Search, YouTube, and Gmail. Users can add products to Universal Cart, and the system utilizes AI to identify the lowest prices and check stock availability.
Universal Cart is designed to foresee potential issues, such as compatibility problems with custom PC components bought from different retailers. If the system detects any conflicts, it will alert users before they complete their payment. Additionally, it integrates with Google Wallet, recognizing preferred merchants and loyalty programs to enhance savings and rewards.

The checkout experience is intended to be seamless between Google Shopping and participating retailers that accept Google Wallet, including brands like Nike, Sephora, Target, Fenty, and Steve Madden. Universal Cart will begin rolling out in summer 2023, starting with Google Shopping, Search, and Gemini, followed by YouTube and Gmail later in the year.
In a separate announcement, Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), designed to reduce discrepancies across online payment platforms. The UCP will launch soon in Canada and Australia, with the UK to follow. It will also be integrated into YouTube in the US as part of the platform’s ongoing transformation into an online shopping option.
