GoPro introduced its new flagship camera line, Mission 1, aimed at enhancing video quality amidst increasing competition from brands like Insta360 and DJI. The full range consists of three models: Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and Mission 1 Pro ILS, all featuring a 1-inch 50-megapixel sensor and the new GP3 processor.

The Mission 1 series markedly improves video capabilities, allowing for resolutions up to 8K at 60 frames per second and 4K at 240 fps. The Pro models support higher frame rates, while the Pro ILS is equipped with an interchangeable lens system compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses.

The cameras possess a 159-degree native field of view, the widest in their class, along with a larger OLED rear display that is 14 percent bigger than previous models. They also include larger buttons for improved usability, especially while wearing gloves.

The 50MP sensor supports 1.6μm pixels at full resolution and 3.2μm fused pixels in quad-bayer mode, yielding dynamic range up to 14 stops, enhancing low-light performance. GoPro claims that this feature captures exceptional detail in dark shadows while preserving highlight details.

GoPro’s GP3 processor is built on a 5nm architecture, enabling impressive resolutions, frame rates, and image quality. The specifications allow for 8K recording at 60 fps, 4K at 240 fps, and 1080p at an astonishing 960 fps. The devices also include advanced capture features such as 10-bit HLG/HDR and GP-Log2 modes for improved dynamic range.

Battery life appears robust with the new Enduro 2 battery, offering over three hours of 4K 30p recording. The cameras can also capture 8K 60p video continuously for up to 37 minutes without airflow, or up to 74 minutes when utilizing airflow for thermal management.

The Mission 1 cameras incorporate various intelligent capture modes, including subject tracking and underwater stabilization, enhancing ease of use for diverse shooting conditions. Their audio capabilities feature a four-mic system with 32-bit float recording.

The Pro ILS model is notable for being the first action camera to feature an interchangeable lens mount compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses. GoPro’s HyperSmooth electronic video stabilization also supports compatible prime lenses.

Additionally, GoPro introduced a Wireless Mic System designed for seamless pairing with the Mission 1 cameras and other devices. The range of accessories includes a Media Mod, Point-and-Shoot grip, and M-Series ND Filters, all compatible with GoPro’s subscription services.

The Mission 1 series will be available in multiple configurations, including individual purchase options or kit bundles. GoPro will disclose pricing and availability details later.
