ChromeOS Flex enables users to prolong the life of their devices while reducing electronic waste. Google stated, “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint.”

Over 500 million Windows 10 PC owners cannot upgrade to Windows 11, facing potential security vulnerabilities. Google has announced a solution, offering a free upgrade to ChromeOS Flex for these users, now available.

This initiative aims to transition unsupported PCs to a more secure operating system without a financial burden. The move comes as Windows 10 ended support in October 2022, leaving users with the choice of purchasing new devices or remaining on an outdated system.

Google confirmed the introduction of a new ChromeOS Flex USB Kit to facilitate this upgrade. The kit is priced around $3 or €3 and is reusable. A partnership with Back Market will assist users in installing ChromeOS Flex on existing PCs or Macs.

Microsoft offers a free extended support update program for Windows 10 users, which ends in October 2023. This situation has led to an increase of users remaining on an unsupported operating system due to the slow adoption of Windows 11.

ChromeOS Flex enables users to prolong the life of their devices while reducing electronic waste. Google stated, “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint.”

According to Google, switching to ChromeOS Flex can decrease energy consumption by an average of 19% compared to other operating systems. This energy efficiency, combined with longevity, aims to mitigate the environmental impact associated with tech waste.

The decision to switch from Windows to ChromeOS remains contentious among users. While many face a precarious future with their current devices, Google’s update presents an alternative solution for upgrading to a modern operating system.

Microsoft continues to upgrade older Windows 11 versions automatically, using AI to determine when enhancements can be applied. Currently, Microsoft is not performing automatic upgrades for eligible Windows 10 PCs but may reconsider this approach after the end of extended support in October.
