OpenAI has acquired Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), marking its first acquisition of a media company. TBPN is a popular tech industry talk show hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, airing daily on YouTube and X for three hours.

The acquisition signifies OpenAI’s endorsement of TBPN’s influence within the tech community, where it has cultivated a significant following among industry insiders in Silicon Valley. The show draws notable figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff, and Sam Altman, fostering discussions around current events and technological developments.

TBPN will retain its brand identity, and OpenAI plans to assist in scaling its operations. The Wall Street Journal reports TBPN is expected to generate over $30 million this year. OpenAI, which already produces a podcast for in-depth discussions, aims to leverage the founders’ marketing expertise beyond the show.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, stated that TBPN’s approach is vital for a company like OpenAI, emphasizing the need for effective communication strategies in engaging the public about AI’s societal impacts. Simo noted that TBPN will maintain its editorial independence, managing programming decisions and guest selections autonomously.

Concerns linger regarding the implications of TBPN discussing OpenAI and its competitors following the acquisition. TBPN will report to Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief political operative, who has a controversial background in political tactics. Previously involved in high-profile campaigns, Lehane’s strategies have included advocating for various crypto interests.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence that the acquisition will not dilute TBPN’s critical voice. He said, “I don’t expect them to go any easier on us, am sure I’ll do my part to help enable that with occasional stupid decisions.”

Hays underlined the partnership’s goal, stating, “Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us.” This acquisition positions TBPN to further influence public discourse on technology and its implications.
