In-flight Wi-Fi on Delta flights will be provided by Amazon Leo starting in 2028, according to announcements from the two companies. This partnership will initially install satellite Wi-Fi on 500 Delta aircraft, with each aircraft equipped with a dedicated Amazon Leo antenna.
The agreement aims to enhance in-flight connectivity, as Amazon promises low-latency Wi-Fi with download speeds of up to 1Gbps and upload speeds of up to 400Mbps. Passengers will have the capability to stream movies, TV shows, and play games while working as if they were on the ground. Delta SkyMiles members will access this Wi-Fi service for free on flights to over 300 destinations.
Amazon currently operates approximately 200 satellites in low Earth orbit and intends to accelerate production in the upcoming year. Delta has employed Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its reservation systems, migrating 600 applications to the cloud since 2020.
Amazon rebranded its satellite network to Amazon Leo last year, positioning itself in competition with established providers like SpaceX’s Starlink. Starlink has formed partnerships with airlines including Alaska Air, United, and British Airways in recent years, making Amazon’s entry into the market a significant move as it develops its operational capabilities.
