Microsoft is testing a new feature named “PC insights” within its Windows 11 Copilot app, designed to answer user queries about their computer’s hardware specifications. This feature allows users to ask specific questions concerning RAM, storage space, GPU, processor usage, antivirus status, and battery health, significantly simplifying hardware diagnostics.
The Copilot app engages with Windows APIs to gather system data but requires explicit permission from the user to access system information. Users can grant one-time access or opt for a permanent clearance to their hardware details. Microsoft emphasizes that access is voluntary to address privacy concerns surrounding the feature.
“PC insights” is currently in experimental testing and is being rolled out gradually in the United States. Microsoft noted that the feature’s responses will depend on the state of the device, enabling users to receive immediate information without extensive navigation through system settings.
However, Microsoft cautioned that Copilot “may not always provide complete or accurate information,” particularly during this testing phase. Users have reported that the Copilot app consumes nearly 1GB of RAM when idle, leading to critiques that it could be more resource-intensive than useful.
