Fortnite returns to Google Play Store on March 19

The agreement ends a multi-year legal battle that began in 2020 when Google removed the game for bypassing in-app purchase fees.

Fortnite will return to Google’s Play Store globally on March 19, coinciding with the launch of the next Fortnite season. This development follows the recent settlement between Epic Games and Google, resolving their long-running legal disputes.

The reintroduction of Fortnite to the Play Store marks a significant milestone for Epic Games. The company previously had its game removed in 2020 when it attempted to circumvent the 30% platform fee on in-app purchases. Apple similarly removed Fortnite from its App Store under comparable circumstances. Epic filed lawsuits against both companies, initiating lengthy legal battles.

The dispute with Apple resulted in significant changes to the App Store in various markets, including the United States and the European Union. Fortnite re-entered the App Store in the EU in 2024 and in the US the previous year. In November, Epic and Google reached a settlement that also included adjustments to Google’s revenue sharing model. Earlier this month, Google announced it would lower its cut of in-app payments to between 10% and 20%.

As part of the settlement, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney reportedly agreed not to publicly criticize the Google Play Store until 2032. Epic also announced a price increase for its in-game V-Bucks currency. Additionally, Fortnite’s “Save the World” mode will become free-to-play starting in April.

This development emphasizes the ongoing changes in mobile app monetization strategies and the impact of legal settlements between large technology companies and developers. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the return of Fortnite to the Play Store may influence future policies regarding in-app purchase frameworks.
