Google Workspace now supports direct editing of password-protected Microsoft Office files, including documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, within Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This update allows users to input passwords for protected files and access them in either view-only or edit modes.

The new functionality eliminates the previous requirement for users to download these files and utilize external software for access. This development supports Google’s strategy to enhance interoperability and reduce vendor lock-in within its ecosystem.

Google stated in its update blog post, “Prior to this, users would have to download and rely on third party applications to remove passwords or edit password protected Microsoft files.” The company has also pursued similar interoperability initiatives, such as integrating Google Meet with Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

This feature is rolling out to all Google Workspace customers. Google has also made efforts to simplify data migration for businesses from platforms like Dropbox and SharePoint over the past year. The rollout commenced recently and is expected to reach all domains by the end of January 2026.
